acrylic on paper,
2 ½” x 3 ½” (64 x 89 mm), 2019
ACEO clown portrait #112 is a homage to a very famous Italian-English clown "Charlie Cairoli" (1910-1980) aka Hubert Jean Charles . He was born in Milan, Italy in a travelling circus family of French origin. He started his performing career at age 7. His father was clown as well. He met Violetta Fratellini (the daughter of famous clown Paul Fratellini) at the Cirque Medrano. She was acrobatic act performer. The couple got married soon after and had three kids. Cairoli was distinguished in his act by wearing a red nose and a Charlie Chaplin-style bowler hat, eyebrows, and costume, and a mustache slightly larger than Chaplin's. He performed at Blackpool Tower Circus every summer season for forty years, a world record for the most performances at a single venue.
